The house was nearly lost in the fall of 1992 when a fire started from a workman's paint removal equipment. The original 3rd floor was lost. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries.

Oliver L. Spaulding was the first owner of the home. During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army as a captain in the 23rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment where he was eventually promoted to Colonel. He also served as Michigan's Secretary of State in the late 1860s.
